The Museums
Together, the museums on Museum Island form one of the largest collections of historical artefacts in the world. Built on the site where Berlin was founded, the first museum, the Altes Museum, opened in 1833. Over time, more institutions were added, to display the German state's vast collection of historical objects to the public. Today, the island is a major cultural landmark, featuring six museums, a park, and the Berlin Cathedral.
The Altes Museum houses an impressive collection from ancient Greece and Rome and stands as one of Berlin’s most beautiful neoclassical buildings. Nearby, the Neues Museum is home to the world-famous bust of Nefertiti, and countless other artefacts from ancient Egypt. At Pergamonmuseum - The Panorama, visitors can virtually experience the magnificent Pergamon Altar as it once appeared in Ancient Greece. The original Pergamon Museum remains closed for renovations, but the Panorama ensures its masterpieces can still be admired. and is definitely worth a visit.
For art from the Middle Ages through the 18th century, head to the Bode Museum, renowned for its stunning architecture and carefully curated displays. Finally, the Alte Nationalgalerie continues the journey with works from the 18th century up to late 19th-century realism, housed in another grand building that was opened in 1867.
